Abraham Lincoln is not to be credited with freedom of the Negroes. A political enemy could have made that statement, but it was Lincoln himself who said it. When Richmond was captured, Lincoln went to get a firsthand look. When he landed, a negro yelled, “Glory, Hallelujah!” The Negro and several others dropped to their knees as the president approached.
“Don’t kneel to me.” Lincoln said. “You must kneel to God only and thank Him for freedom.”

The sixteenth president of US was born Feb.12, 1809, in a log cabin on farm in Kentucky. In 1858 he won much fame by debating slavery with Stephen A. Douglas. He was elected president in 1860, and the Civil War followed his inauguration. As the war progressed, his complex moves toward ending slavery included the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863; He was reelected in 1864. General Lee surrendered April 9, 1865; Five days later Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford’s Theater, Washington. He died early the next morning.
